Applying UV window film to your existing windows offers many benefits that you can enjoy. UV window film can block more than 90 percent of the harmful UV rays that the sun generates. A major risk factor of skin cancer is being exposed to UV radiation; UVA rays account for roughly 95 percent of this type of radiation. Sunlight also generates more heat during the day through unprotected windows causing the temperature inside to rise, forcing your air conditioner to work harder to keep your house or office cool. This sunlight can also produce a glare during certain times, making the room extremely bright and TV or computer screens difficult to view. Your furniture, artwork, rugs, and other items that are exposed to this bright light will fade more rapidly. Installing UV window film addresses all of these concerns. It reduces the cost of energy and the wear and tear on your AC unit. It increases your visibility inside the home and protects your furniture. Here is what you need to know about the process of installing window film in your home.
Install UV Window Film Like a Professional
Professionals make installing window film look relatively easy, but don’t be fooled. Remember that they have experience and expertise on how to do it correctly and usually provide a warranty that guarantees their work. They can also recommend the best type of window film to use for your purpose and windows. But, if you decide you want to install UV window film yourself, make sure you have the right tools and prepare the area when you plan to install UV window film:
- Bottled water
- Spray bottle
- Rubber-bladed squeegee
- Break-away utility knife
- Razorblade, single-edged
- Tape measure or ruler
- Film aid application concentrate
- A lint-free, soft cloth or paper coffee filters
An important note about the residential film is that it’s applied directly to the glass surface on the inside of the windows. For those with removable storm pane windows, you can remove and apply the film, then remount it. To prepare for the installation, make sure to follow these steps:
- Fill the spray bottle with the film aid concentrate and one quart of bottled water.
- You should expect to use several single-edged razor blades for cleaning the windows. The utility knife will be used for trimming the film.
- Use the rubber-bladed squeegee to press the film onto the window and remove the soapy water under the film.
- The toweling should be lint-free so that it can both clean the windows and absorb the water that you squeegee off.
Thoroughly Clean Windows
Spray a good amount of the solution that you made into your windows. Using your hands and squeegee, thoroughly clean the windows. Use the razor blade to get rid of any paint or dirt that’s caked on. Spray the windows as necessary, paying particular attention to the corners. To remove any accumulated dirt on the window gasket, use a paper coffee filter or soft cloth. Repeat this process until your windows are as clean as possible.
Measure and Cut the UV Window Film
Start to unroll your film and ensure that it’s done on a flat, clean surface, which is not too far from your windows. Cut the film about 1” larger than the dimensions you measured for your windows to make sure that it will fit.
Apply Film & Trim
Before starting the application process, generously spray windows until there’s soapy water running down the glass. It must be thoroughly wet. Carefully remove the liner of the film. Spray the soapy solution onto the exposed part of the adhesive. This process will reduce contamination, prevent static cling, and make the separation of the liner easier. Your hands should be wet with the solution before handling the film. This helps to avoid leaving fingerprints on the adhesive. Ensure that the exposed, dry adhesive side is thoroughly wet, and begin to apply the film to the glass. Use your hand to smoothly apply the film onto the glass. Spray the outside surface of the film once it has been applied. Carefully and firmly use the squeegee on the film. Use the razor blade/utility knife to trim the film. The entire film should be wetted again; then reapply the squeegee. Press the film firmly and make sure all the water is removed so the adhesive can stick to the glass.
